FAQ's

When does recruiting start and finish?
The majority of our positions are available for the busy summer period (early October to the end of March). Summer applications generally open online in early August. Closing dates vary by position but all recruitment is generally closed by November. However, we can recruit at any time of the year as vacancies exist and these will all be listed online.

How do I get a work visa?
Please see our Visas and Work Permits page for further details.

I'm an Australian citizen/ resident. Do I need a work visa to get a job in New Zealand?
No. Australian citizens and residents are legally entitled to work in New Zealand.

What type of jobs are available?
Each summer, seasonal positions become available in the following areas:
Restaurants (Alpine, Panorama & Sir Edmund Hillary Cafe')
The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre (Retail, Museum, Theatre, Planetarium)
Housekeeping
Front Office
Porters
Kitchen Staff
Activities & Tours (Glacier Explorers, Tasman Valley 4WD & Argo Tours, Trekking)

Full time positions also become available from time to time.

What pay rate can I expect to earn?
Pay rates depend on the position you have applied for and your previous experience. Our minimum starting rate is $13.40 per hour however, we recognise the value of each individual and are happy to discuss pay and conditions with you.

Do you provide training?
Yes, We are committed to providing continuous on-the-job training that would introduce you to new skills or extend the ones you already have.

How much does my accommodation cost?
Depending upon your accommodation type, Board and Lodgings start at $133.00 per week. This covers rent, meals and electricity and will be deducted from your pay each week. For accommodation with cooking facilities, the rate includes on shift meals only.

Is there a laundry service or do I do my own?
Washing machines and dryers are provided in each accommodation block and are free to use. Simply provide your own washing powder.

What social activities are available in Mount Cook?
Aside from pursuits like climbing, biking or swimming in the local lakes, you can make use of the fully equipped gym and the tennis courts. Remember to bring your favourite CDs or fitness video. Our World Heritage National Park is one big playground. We don't push you out there but we may heartily encourage you to go for it! The local walks range from saunters to rambles. How much energy you use up is entirely up to you.

What should I bring?
Contact us before you arrive to discuss the type of accommodation and personal items you may need. We are able to supply you with duvets, blankets, sheets and pillowcases (though you are welcome to bring your own). You will also need:

Towels
Personal Toiletries
A double adapter

We suggest you bring along any other personal items that will help make you feel at home - so don't forget your TV, stereo and some family pictures!

What is a covering letter and CV
A covering letter is a short letter introducing yourself and stating your suitability for the position you are applying for. CV stands for Curriculum Vitae, or resume and is a quick summary of your education, achievements, skills, previous employment and training. Applications without these attachments will not be considered.
